NFL Week 5

11-3. You read that correctly. That is some kind of good but I do not want to brag cause this is a new week and anything can happen. Like 12-2. Here are my picks.

Jacksonville at Buffalo- Well the Jaguars are coming off a huge victory against the Colts. You might remember that I correctly picked the outcome. What? You don’t? Well give yourself a second and go look at the greatness that was my week 4 predictions. Anyways, enough about my greatness, the Jaguars are visiting a horrible team in the Bills. The problem here is that the Jaguars have always lost games where they should easily win. The always play down to their competition. Luckily, the Bills weakness is at defense which will let MJD have an even bigger break out game than he had last week. Fitzpatrick of the Bills will be able to find holes in the Jags secondary. Heck, Josh Crews could find holes in the Jags secondary. With that said, the Jags will sneak out of Buffalo with a victory.             JAGUARS win 24-20.

Denver at Baltimore- The Ravens will be able to stop the Broncos running game. Oh wait, Josh McDaniels will stop the Broncos running game. Flacco seemed to turn a corner in his game winning drive against the Steelers. That will be a huge step for the Ravens considering that the Broncos are 12th against the rush and Ray Rice is banged up.                 RAVENS win 20-13

Kansas City at Indianapolis- The Colts are going to torch the young secondary of the Chiefs. Peyton is going to make sure his defense can not lose another one for him. Matt Cassel is not good. He just is not. Also,  Jamal Charles of the Chiefs is averaging almost 8 YPC but he does not get the ball enough. That will hinder the Chiefs not help them this week. COLTS win 38-20.

Green Bay at Washington- Aaron Rodgers is one of the most exciting players to watch. You know who isnt? The Redskins. Seriously, they are not exciting in the slightest. Exception to this is if Ryan Torrain runs over a defender like he did last Sunday.

   Anyways, GREEN BAY wins 30-20.

St. Louis at Detroit- Last year this matchup would be the laughing stock of the NFL. This year its only like that for Detroit. However, both teams look to be on the right road and are getting more competitive each week. The Rams won last week to go 2-2. Lions almost won against the Rams. Lions get their first victory. LIONS win 31-28.

Chicago at Carolina- Cutler is out. The Bears looked awful on offense last Sunday night. This game is going to be extremely close. T.O.s will decide this one. Thats why I am still going with the Bears on the road. Claussen is a rookie who will try to make one throw too many. Bears win 17-14.

Tampa Bay at Cincinnati- Cincy couldnt pull out the victory against the Browns. Speaking of Browns I have a joke, what do you get when you cross Mangini with Jake Delhomme? The FREAKING CLEVELAND BROWNS. They are horrible. Enough about them, Cincy will get back to their winning ways against an over achieving Tamp team. BENGALS win 28-10.

Atlanta at Cleveland- (please see above) ATLANTA wins 24-14.

New York Giants at Houston- Giants defensive line looked amazing last week. Houstons offensive line has looked above average this season. This game will truly come down to whether Arian Foster can continue to run like a wild man. He will. TEXANS win 30-23.

New Orleans at Arizona- Look at the AZ QB situation. Enough said. (Seriously though, what does that say about just how awful Leinart was. AZ cut him) SAINTS win 27-14.

UPSET ALERT: Tennessee at Dallas- The Titans lost last week at home. Dallas was on a bye so we all lost. Sike. I think that CJ28 goes crazy this week. He is due. TITANS win 24-21.

San Diego at Oakland- Oakland is going to play their best game to date. I am tempted to pick the Raiders but with no McFadden I will go with the now pass happy Chargers.             CHARGERS win 23-17.

Philadelphia at San Francisco- The Eagles have no Mike Vick. What I dont understand is why the doctors just dont give him a shot like Vick gave to his dogs. Too soon? Well the 49ers will finally get a win this week. Thank you Frank Gore. 49ERS win 20-17.

Minnesota at New York Jets- MOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yea I forgot, REVIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As nice a pickup Moss is going to be, this is not the week to showcase that. Moss will score a TD but not rack up many yards. The problem for the Jets is that AP is there. Minnesota will stop the run of the Jets and force Sanchez into some crucial turnovers. VIKINGS win 27-17.

on February 16, 2009 the jacksonville jaguars pulled the plug on a long time friend. Fred Taylor has been released from his duties as the long time running back of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is currently 16th overall on the all time rushing list. He has played his entire career (11 seasons) for the Jaguars. I remember watching James Stewart hurt his knee early in the the 1997 season and seeing a young Taylor come out to the field and the rest is history. I personally am a huge Fred Taylor fan. He helped bring a national championship to the Florida Gators in 1996. There was a part of his career that seemed like he could not stay healthy and earned the nickname “fragile Fred”. I always argued on behalf of Taylor because if my groin ripped completely off my bone i too will take some time to come back and recover. And now the era of Fred Taylor has ended.

I understand that Taylor was going to take a 6 million dollar hit on the cap. I understand that the Jaguars are looking to get younger and Taylor is past the benchmark for RBs since he is 33 years old. I understand that Maurice Jones Drew is the new young stallion and Taylor is an expensive backup. So logically it makes perfect sense to release him. But i can not understand how you still make that move. After you pay a man, i will not mention this over payed WR name,  so much money for absolute no production in 2008. As well as Drayton Florence at DB who also played horrible. You refuse to pay Fred Taylor money to be a backup? Then Taylor comes out and says he offered to take a pay cut but the Jaguars refused to negotiate and were set on releasing him. This move does not make sense to me. I know that the NFL is a business and tough decisions have to be made but sometimes it seems OK to show loyalty to people. Fred Taylor should still be wearing the 28 jersey as a Jacksonville Jaguar.

Oh and JERRY PORTER is horrible!

what a game

controversy has once again reared its ugly head. as i was watching the game it became very obvious that the Cardinals were getting tagged for many questionable calls. A team that averaged around 40 yards a game in penalties all of a sudden hits well over the century mark. Three personal fouls are called on one drive alone. now understand that i am not a Cardinals “fan” but i was rooting for them over one of my least favorite teams. i was getting rather diturbed by the amount of calls. however, it is the two calls that they did not call that have me more upset than anything. Santonio Holmes makes the catch of his life which i will give him credit for but with alot of luck seeing as how he let the previous thow go right through his hands. After his touchdown he decides to pull a Lebron James and act like hes pouring powder out of the football and throw it into the air. Right then the whistle should have blown and laundry chould have littered the air. “Personal foul #10, unsportsmanlike conduct for using the football as a prop in a celebration.” I hate that rule but they have been calling players for less than that all year. Then the “fumble”. After seeing this play over and over i am convinced that the ball was not fumbled but should have been ruled an incomplete pass. My question is why did the officials not review this call? they had already had four reviews throughout the game and they missed the most important one. Its the last play of the game and they never even took another look to make sure they got it right. I am not saying they robbed Arizona of a championship but they definitely robbed them of the opportunity at the end.

Overall, the game turned out to be one of the best games ever. Had the Giants not won the previous year the way they did this Super bowl might have been the best finish. My hate for the steelers continues. I can only pray that the Jaguars get better and crush all opponents who stand in their way next season.

so this is the new year…

normally in years past i could finish that song with the proper lyrics and say that i dont feel any different. however this past year has been life changing for me. a quick review: received my AA, visited Costa Rica, oh yea and i proposed to charity. now fast forward to 2009. here is what i expect from this year

first thing is first. this is the year that i will become a married man. its an overwhelming and exciting thought. the idea of actually starting my own family is unreal. i feel like i struggle with my own little routine called life. nevertheless, i look forward to October 16th, 2009 and i know it will be here before i know it.

another thing i expect from 2009 is to read at least 30 books. i used to consider myself a reader. but once i got to 6th grade  the books stop having illustrations. oh ryan you and your jokes. but for serious, 30 books will be read by myself.

another thing i expect from 2009 is to watch the Gators win the national championship in just 7 days. staying with sports, the jaguars better not suck again or else i will say the same thing this time next year!

i understand that these goals and expectations are somewhat trivial (except for that whole marrying thing). i have more goals and more expectations  but will save you the bore. i hope that everyone has a new year to remember. my biggest goal is to honestly walk in closer communion with God. i know that sounds so typical but it really is my desire. so i lift my chocolate milk to you and 2009! here here!

jaguars in review

i know what you are thinking right now. why are you reading anything on the sweet team known as the jacksonville jaguars. how do you think i am feeling? i am the one writing this for some reason. the jaguars entered the season with the hope of a super bowl championship. the expectations did not seem unrealistic following the 2007 season that ended when dennis friggin northcutt dropped a touchdown late in the game against the then undefeated patriots. but that was then this is now.

i would like to start with the preface that i love the jaguars through and through but this year has been the toughest. if i come across as harsh or overly critical i will be glad to get that across. the jaguars season was off to a horrible start when offensive lineman richard collier was shot and hospitalized. not only was this tragic for the obvious reason of it changing this mans life but it also meant that 2007 Left Tackle would continue starting. i will not mention his name. it dare not leave my lips. then in first game of the year the jaguars lose two guards for the season. needless to say they were desimated at the offensive line.

however, the most disturbing trend of the 2008 season was the lack of “clutchness” by the team. too many games were lost because the team could not come up with just a play or two to win a game or put a team away on defense. week in week out either the offense or defense failed the team. there were no games where the jaguars looked anything close to 2007. overall the jaguars as well as their fans are ready to turn the page to 2009.

a few positives are in order after negative comments. maurice jones drew is superman. the more he touched the ball the stronger he seemed to get. his 15+ TD season will be strong momentum heading into 2009. on the defensive side there are two players who deserve credit. derrick harvey and gerald sensabaugh. i understand that derrick harvey did not tear the opponents offensive line apart but he did lead the team in QB hurries and pressures. as he got more playing time he seemed to gain confidence and play stronger. Gerald Sensabaugh has earned himself a starting role at safety with Reggie “cant cover a soul” Nelson needing to be moved to corner or the bench. Sensabaugh has 4+ INTs and a leader in tackles.

overall the 2008 season has been nothing less than a failure/ dissapointment/ suckfest. look for 2009 to be much improved. the talent is there to contend and if a few changes are made along the offensive line and defensive line the jaguars should be back. heres to 2009!!!!
